Atlanta (Ga.) B.E.S.T. Academy three-star tight end Robert Tucker originally planned on possibly committing after his official visit to South Carolina. But the 6-foot-3, 242-pounder didn't want to wait and pledged to head coach Will Muschamp at his school last Thursday.

What led Tucker to choose the Gamecocks?

"Everything about it," Tucker said. "The people -- I knew Coach (Bryan) McClendon since he was at Georgia, he was recruiting me. He's real cool and down to earth. I was just excited about the offer. We are tight."

Tucker followed through with his official visit to South Carolina over the weekend and had a great time.

"The people and when we went to the academic side I really liked that," he said when asked what stood out. "I'm undecided (on a major), so I really liked how they sat us down with the professors and stuff."

He enjoyed getting to know his future position coach.

"Coach Pat Washington, he's funny," Tucker said. "He's a cool dude too. I'm looking forward to getting coached by him."

Tucker was hosted on the trip by wide receiver Terry Googer.

"He said it's real fun," Tucker said. "He said the coaches are new to him too, so I guess we're both trying to feel out the coaches. But he says it's fun there."

Tucker also likes how co-offensive coordinator Kurt Roper plans to use him in the offense.

"They said they're going to use me with my hand in the dirt," Tucker said. "I'm going to block, but they're going to pass the ball a lot too. I'm versatile."

Tucker believes there's an opportunity to play early.

"They said the spot is open," Tucker said. "Everybody is working for a spot, so I'm trying to come in and play right away."
