Nunez to split time at quarterback and receiver

It didn't take long for South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp to provide the first news item of the day.

Meeting with media members before going to the podium, Muschamp confirmed at SEC Media Days Thursday that sophomore Lorenzo Nunez would spend time at both quarterback and wide receiver this season.

"Whoever is going to help us win football games, is going to play quarterback at South Carolina," Mushamp said. "Lorenzo is also going to play some receiver. We've worked through that this summer a little bit, but he's going to have his hand in the quarterback position."

The possibility of the athletic Nunez playing other positions has long been talked about on South Carolina message boards and Gamecock Central reported earlier this month that it was likely Nunez would take on a sort of hybrid role both as a signal caller and receiver or even running back in some situations.

A 6-foot-3, 217-pounder, Nunez completed 32-of-52 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns last season as a freshman. But where Nunez showed his most potential and athleticism was as a rusher where he was second on the team with 375 yards on just 59 carries, a 6.4-yard average.

With a lack of proven playmakers on offense, Muschamp realizes that Nunez is too athletic to watch from the sidelines.

Muschamp reiterated that Nunez is still in the quarterback competition.

"He's still there, he's still there," Muschamp said. "He's a guy that we're going to be able to use. He's a good athlete and we need help at the receiver position. Unfortunately for him, with the injury after four (spring) practices, it really put him behind the eight ball at the position."

"He is still going to be involved at quarterback. He and I have talked about it throughout the summer and he is repping some at receiver. He is repping in the quarterback room as well. He wants to help our football team."

A former four-star prospect, Nunez was ranked the No. 16 dual threat quarterback in the 2015 class by Rivals.com.
