Martin updates injuries, talks foreign tour

South Carolina men's basketball coach Frank Martin announced Monday that the Gamecocks will travel to Costa Rica for a six-day foreign tour from August 6-12.

South Carolina will play two games versus the Costa Rica National Team and will have one day of combined practice with the Team while on the tour, in addition to holding two clinics, including one for Special Olympics.

The trip is Carolina’s first foreign tour since Fall 2008.

Martin met with the media on Monday to discuss the tour and more:

** Martin provided injury updates on several players: Freshman Sedee Keita will not play in the SC Pro-Am due to a wrist injury suffered on Sunday. Chris Silva has a hamstring injury. Maek Kalev-Kotsar has a stress fracture but is expected to be cleared the last week of July to begin running. Korey Holden had a procedure done on his knee. All but Holden are expected to travel with the team to to Costa Rica.

** Per NCAA rules regarding a foreign tour, South Carolina will hold 10 days of practices prior to departing Columbia. Carolina will travel to San Jose, Costa Rica, on August 6, where the Gamecocks will host two clinics and play the Costa Rica National Team twice. The Gamecocks will tour the capital city during their stay, and will have opportunities to see and enjoy the local culture and cuisine.

** Martin said that the trip will not only allow the team to bond, but will also allow them to see how the concepts they install in the offseason actually work on the court.

** Martin says they'll handle the summer differently than in the past. He doesn't want to burn the players out too early. There will be times during the trip that he'll remove himself from the court and allow his assistants to coach and let them get that experience while hearing a different voice.

** Martin says that the success on the court as increased their access to top players on the recruiting trail that made they didn't have before.
