Martin set to hire new assistant

South Carolina men's basketball coach Frank Martin will hire Towson assistant Bruce Shingler to replace Lamont Evans, Gamecock Central has learned, confirming a report by ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman.

“Bruce is one of the bright young stars in this business,”Martin is quoted as saying in Shingler's Towson bio. “He is a former high school teacher and coach who has a tremendous rapport with kids.”

Shingler was originally mentioned as a possibility by Gamecock Central earlier this week.

Shinger will replace Evans who took a job as assistant coach at Oklahoma State.

Shinger, who spent three seasons at Towson, previously coached at Morgan State after serving as an AAU head coach of the DC Assault 17-and-Under team.

Shingler was a four-year starter and Academic All-American point guard at St. Augustine’s College from 2001-05. He averaged six points and more than seven assists per game.
