The safety from Summeville, S.C., redshirted as a true freshman last season after enrolling at Carolina in January.

Smalls went through the spring with the team in 2015, but did not participate in any team drills as he continued to rehab from a high school knee injury. He saw limited practice time in the fall.

A former three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, Smalls was ranked the No. 37 cornerback in the class of 2014 and the No. 12 prospect in the state of South Carolina.
