Ty'Son Williams talks possible South Carolina transfer

Former North Carolina running back Ty'Son Williams says the process for him to eventually transfer to South Carolina is underway.

"The first step is to get accepted (to USC)," Williams told GamecockCentral.com Saturday. "I started that process earlier this week, so we're just waiting right now for everything to fall through. Once we get the word back on that, then the process can move forward."

Williams, who rushed 19 times for 57 yards as a true freshman, will have to take a redshirt next season while he sits out due to NCAA transfer rules and then would have three years of eligibility left.

Because Williams has not yet been released to South Carolina, the former three-star running back has not yet been able to talk to the Gamecocks coaching staff. Once he's accepted to USC and is legally able to talk to the staff, that will happen.

Still, the former Sumter (S.C.) Crestwood standout is very familiar with the South Carolina program and nearly chose the Gamecocks out of high school in 2015 before they filled up at the running back position.

He instead signed with North Carolina after carrying offers from Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and others.

"South Carolina has been like a second home for me, so of course, playing for USC would be something special," Williams said. "I've always had a lot of respect for that program and what they've done, a lot of respect for what they've accomplished throughout the years. Coach Muschamp seems to be putting everything back together and the program will be back real soon."

If Williams is not released to South Carolina, then he would have to walk-on for his first year in Columbia and then go on scholarship for the 2017 season. If forced to go that route, Williams confirmed that he'd use the G.I. Bill to pay for school.

"I've been talking to the head coach, Coach Fedora, just trying to get that worked out," Williams said. "If they continue to keep it the way it is, that's fine, we have other options. I think that would just make everything easier and smoother, but if not, everything will still get worked out."

Williams says he's never met South Carolina running backs coach Bobby Bentley, famous in the state for his job creating the Byrnes powerhouse program.

"Obviously, that's one of the things I'm looking forward to is meeting him, along with the rest of the coaching staff," Williams said. "We're just waiting for everything to fall through and to move along to the next chapter. Once we get this stuff worked out, I'll be ready to finalize everything."

South Carolina and North Carolina meet in Charlotte in 2019 for a neutral site contest.
