Gamecocks regional announced

Postseason baseball is back at South Carolina.

South Carolina was selected to host one of 16 regional sites—but not one of the eight national seeds— for the NCAA Tournament Monday, the NCAA announced on its annual selection show on ESPNU.

The No. 1 seeded Gamecocks (42-15, 20-9 SEC) will host No. 4 Rhode Island Friday at Founders Park. No. 2 seed UNC Wilmington and No. 3 Duke round out the Columbia, South Carolina regional.

South Carolina was not named one of the top eight national seeds, meaning the team will have to travel to a Super Regional if it and the host of the corresponding regional both win.

South Carolina is paired with the Clemson regional. Clemson will host No. 4 Western Carolina, No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 3 Nebraska in its regional.

The Gamecocks finished the year atop the SEC East before going winless in two games at the SEC Tournament.

The postseason starts Friday when regionals kick off. First pitch at Founders Park has not been announced. The full field of 64 teams, including the teams traveling to Columbia for the regional, will be announced Monday at noon on ESPNU.
