Quick recap: Will Muschamp previews Gamecocks' spring practice

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp previewed the Gamecocks' spring practice Monday afternoon. Here are notes from his meeting with the media:

** Muschamp jokes the spring depth chart, to be released this afternoon, is the most important thing. It will have five QBs listed as starter. He hopes to whittle down to one or two players by the end of spring, but it could carry into fall. Muschamp is asked how nice it is to have 5 QBs to choose from. "If you've got five, you've got none." Will try to get it down to three as soon as possible.

** OL Trey Derouen, DL Dante Sawyer, DE Shamiek Blackshear and LB Jordan Diggs who will miss the spring due to injuries per Muschamp. WR Jerad Washington will be limited as he still recovers from injury that ended his season last year.

** Muschamp says Skai Moore will play linebacker. There's a lot of things he can do, but right now he's a LB. Moore will be limited this spring due to a neck sprain, but it is not considered serious.

** Muschamp says the base defense will be 4-3, but with 3-4 mixed in. Sounds like that is fluid based on what the coaches learn about players. Installation is the primary focus in the spring. He also wants to see physical practice. Winning the line of scrimmage is key in the SEC.

** "I'm not real confident in the safety position based on a year ago," Muschamp says. Will rep guys at multiple positions in the secondary. Chris Lammons will receive reps at CB, S and nickel. Rico McWilliams could play multiple positions.

** Muschamp feels very good about the kicking game.

** David Williams and Rod Talley top the depth chart at RB. AJ Turner has also done some good things this offseason.

** Early enrollee Bryan Edwards enters the spring as a starter at WR.

** Muschamp is extremely pleased with Brandon McIlwain's work ethic so far.

** Mason Zandi will play left tackle.

** Muschamp jokes that he "got worried walking into some high schools Bobby (Bentley) beat 50-0. They might not like him too much." He called Bentley a "great person" and praised Bentley and Ellis Johnson's relationships with high school coaches.
