Quick-hitters: Muschamp talks scrimmage

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp met with the media Monday to discuss this past Saturday's closed scrimmage. Here are some notes from that:

** Will Muschamp says that Darius English is out for the rest of the spring with a pulled squad. Wide receiver Terry Googer has a high ankle sprain and could be out as well - could be back Saturday. They still hope to get QB Lorenzo Nunez back this week.

** Brandon McIlwain had "a lot of command" in the scrimmage. Very pleased with his decision making. McIlwain was 12-14. They threw the entire playbook at the guys and he handled it well.

*** SUBSCRIBERS: The Insider Report: Recruiting updates on top targets ***

** Muschamp says David Williams and AJ Turner have distanced themselves at the RB position. Turner has top-end speed and good quickness. He's a one-cut runner who can catch it well. Need to get him outside and in space.

** Jamari Smith is working strictly at the slot receiver position and has done some good things.

** BUCK Keir Thomas has made strides from practice 1 to now. Kobe Smith has also done some good things.

** Muschamp says some players have stood out in the secondary but they're a long way from being good there.

** Muschamp says he re-watched the first scrimmage to compare to Saturday's. They've come a long way.

** Muschamp again mentions that they need fans in the stands for the spring game and that a big group of recruits will be there.

** Muschamp says the team, as a whole, has responded to having a lot thrown at them. Need to improve areas of prep, but pleased for most part.

** Muschamp on pass-rush: Need to continue to try to add speed to the field. Have some size and length, but need speed.

** Muschamp says difficult to get sacks these days because of quick passes but still have to push the pocket up front.

** Muschamp says he never wants the "big guys" on defense playing more than 8 snaps in a row. Once a big guy is tired "he's done." Muschamp is big on counting snaps and having a rotation to keep players fresh up front.

** Deebo Samuel is very explosive. He's a hard cover. Explosive with good ball skills down field. Googer was having a good spring before injury.

** Need to do a great job between April 9 and August 1. Teams can improve a lot in the offseason.

** Spring game week is a "huge week" for team. Take pride in how you play in front of your home crowd. Still a long week before the spring game.

** Larenz Bryant had his best production of the spring on Saturday. Seems to like his combination of guys at LB. Need 5 inside LBs to feel good.

** Muschamp reiterates that they need to be a faster team and a deeper team at some spots. But a lot of teams are saying that. Need FR to help.

** Muschamp first met former Summerville coach John McKissick about a month ago. "He's a legend. ... Very pleased he came over to watch."

** Muschamp says Mack Brown will be at practice Thursday. Hopes he'll address the team after practice is over.

** Muschamp, who is going to Greene Street to meet with students, hopes to be on the USC campus as much as possible.

** This week plus spring game is last chance to get most prospects on campus before June camp circuit. Have to get them on campus. If you get them on campus and recruit them the right away and they go somewhere else, that's fine. Have to get them on campus, though.

** Muschamp on off-campus spring practices: "You ever been to Michigan in March? I'd go to Florida if I were them." Muschamp also points out that Michigan is not doing anything illegal at all. Muschamp says he also spends zero time worrying about what anyone else is doing.

** Muschamp says everyone will play in the game, but it's about competition, so he won't pull the starters early.
