Quick-hitters: D.J. Smith out for rest of spring

Here are post-practice notes from South Carolina's practice on Tuesday evening:

** South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp says that safety D.J. Smith will have surgery on Thursday to repair an injury to his thumb. Smith tore a ligament in his thumb on the first day of practice, but it wasn't something that needed immediate surgery and Smith wanted to practice some before having the surgery.

** Muschamp personally pulled Alan Knott from practice in order to allow his sprained wrist to heal. Perry Orth broke the collar bone on his non-throwing shoulder Saturday and will be back on June 1. Darius English has a groin injury.

** Muschamp says that quarterback Lorenzo Nunez was "in a brace today moving around" and they hope to have him back next week.

** Jalen Christian was not at practice due to a personal issue, but should be back.

** Muschamp confirmed our report that Darin Smalls is no longer with the football team.

** Muschamp said that the quarterbacks were live at times in scrimmages because they have an open quarterback battle and needed to put those guys in game situations. Quarterbacks will not be put in live situations in the fall. The quarterback competition will, however, continue to August.

** Over 90 lettermen have signed up to play for the alumni flag football game that will kickoff at 11 a.m. prior to the spring game on April 9.

** Muschamp hopes the fans will come out to the spring game. There will be a lot of recruits on campus.

** Muschamp says that Jamari Smith is going to play both running back and wide receiver and is someone that should help the offense.

** Defensive lineman Abu Lamin says he's lost about 20 pounds this offseason and has had a blast in practice. He likes learning under defensive line coach Lance Thompson.
