Notes & Quotes: Mooney injury update

OXFORD, Miss. - The best notes and quotes from South Carolina's 9-5 series-clinching victory over Ole Miss Friday.

Notes

-- South Carolina head coach Chad Holbrook said that he wouldn't know until Saturday if shortstop Marcus Mooney would be available for the series finale at Ole Miss, but said that it was probably 50-50 whether he would play in it.

Mooney took a pitch off his arm, right around his elbow. Mooney stayed in the game -- ultimately shifting to second base to create a shorter throw --but Holbrook said the arm tightened up as the game progressed.

-- Freshman right-hander Braden Webb struck out 14 batters, the the most for a Carolina pitcher since Billy Buckner struck out 16 vs. Clemson on March 6, 2004, and retired 17 straight batters at one point in Friday's game.

-- For the second consecutive day, all nine Gamecock position starters had at least one hit. Chris Cullen went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Dom Thompson-Williams was 2-for-5 as was Gene Cone. Marcus Mooney went 2-for-4 and LT Tolbert drove in two runs.

-- Alex Destino extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a base hit in the fifth inning.

-- Thompson-Williams has reached base in all 24 games this year and owns a 13-game hitting streak. Cone also extended his hitting streak to 10 games

-- South Carolina out-hit Ole Miss 14-7 and is now 18-0 on the year when out-hitting its opponent. The Gamecocks are 21-0 when leading after six innings of play as well

-- South Carolina has reached double digits in hits in four of the first five SEC games this season.

Quotes

Head coach Chad Holbrook on Webb... "Braden was very effective obviously. Throwing 93-94 mph with a changeup like that, and getting his curveball over, he was tough to hit tonight. He had it all going. I think Braden's command will continue to get better. He had a lot of confidence in his changeup and he was throwing some offspeed pitches tonight behind in the count, which he hadn't done up to this point."

Webb on how it felt... "All glory to God in this situation. I couldn't have been more blessed after that rocky first inning. Coming out in second inning and putting goose eggs on the board, there is not a better feeling than that. Just knowing your team is going to battle all game, putting up 14 hits and 9 runs on the board against an SEC school, clinching a series, it is a humbling feeling."

Cullen on winning the series... "It's huge coming to Ole Miss, they're a really competitive team, a great team. Being able to get these first two games, it's good for us, but we've got to come out tomorrow and try to get that third one."
