Notes and quotes from the College of Charleston's 13-inning 6-5 win over South Carolina.

NOTES

--Alex Destino extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a double in the first inning. Other hitting streaks extended on Tuesday: Gene Cone (12), Matt Williams (2) and Chris Cullen (4).

--Dom Thompson-Williams was intentionally walked in the ninth inning. The walk extends his on-base streak to 26 games, which is every game this season.

--Tuesday’s attendance was 8,242. It was officially a sellout. It’s the second sellout of the season. The first was the Friday night game against Clemson on March 5.

--Jonah Bride was hit by two pitches against the Cougars. He’s been hit a team-leading twelve times this season after getting plunked in the sixth inning. He’s only nine behind the school record of 21 times in a season.

--The game went to extra innings for the first time all season. It was South Carolina’s first extra inning game since they lost at home to Presbyterian 7-4 in 10 innings.

--This was the first time the Gamecocks batted in the ninth inning at home this season. The responded by scoring two runs and tying the game at four to force extra innings.

--Tuesday’s loss was the first at the newly named Founders Park and snapped the team’s 13-game win streak.

--Sixteen position players were used in the game, including the starters. The Gamecocks also used nine different pitchers. The only players on the roster who didn’t play were: Clarke Schmidt, Colton Provey, Madison Stokes, Adam Hill, Braden Webb, Kyle Anderson, Colie Bowers, Brandon McIlwain, Caleb Whitenton and Dillon Hodge.

--Josh Reagan allowed the first run he’s allowed all year (22 innings) after a solo home run in the 12th inning.

--Nine of the Gamecocks 13 runners left on base were left on in scoring position.

--The heart of the order (John Jones, Alex Destino, Dom Thompson-Williams and Jonah Bride) went a combined 3-for-20 (.150) with two walks and two RBIs. Take away Alex Destino’s 3-for-6, 2 RBI night, Jones, Thompson-Williams and Bride went 0-for-17 with two walks.

--Holbrook said he came close to starting Madison Stokes but didn’t. He also said Stokes was going to play but didn’t because of the flow of the game. Stokes has been out all season with a broken bone in his foot.

--Holbrook said he’s “pretty sure” he’s taking Stokes to Vanderbilt for this weekend’s series. Also said Stokes is not 100 percent but is able to take some at-bats to get him acclimated again to the game.

--The team travels to Vanderbilt for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series against the Commodores. The Gamecocks will leave Wednesday morning for Nashville.

QUOTES

Alex Destino on his game-tying double: “I put a good swing on a fastball down the middle. I got to second and saw the whole team running at me so I was getting spun around before I realized it was a ground rule double. So I was not aware.”

Marcus Mooney on the longer game: “It can get tiring, but that’s baseball. You just have to find a way to win anyways.”

Alex Destino on playing a good team during the week: “That’s a very good team, very well coached with a lot of talent. We came ready to play, but you have to tip your hat to Charleston. They came in and played better.”

Holbrook on the team’s errors: “We dropped a fly ball, we cant throw a ball to second base on a guy we should have thrown out by 10 feet. We can’t block a ball from going in the outfield. We gave them three of their first four runs. That’s not how we play. We try to make people earn every run that they get. We didn’t do that tonight against a really good College of Charleston team.”

Holbrook on Cropper throwing to first instead of home: “Those pitchers fielded their rears’ off in practice yesterday but you got to apply it in the game. It was an easy play but there was a lot on the line and he hadn’t been in a situation like that before and he just didn’t handle it the proper way.”

Holbrook on not playing up to par: “Ultimately, in the game of baseball, you get what you deserve. And I think we got what we deserve tonight. We didn’t play good enough to win tonight.”

Holbrook on the team’s start: “You’d think I’d sign up for this. If you had said you’re 23-6 and 6-and-O, I would have taken you to Ruth’s Chris on that one.”

Holbrook on his team: I love my team. I love my kids in there. I can’t wait to get back on the field with them tomorrow. I got a good group in there. They didn’t play the way they’re capable of tonight, but that don’t make me love them any less.”
