In-state DE Tyreek Johnson commits to Gamecocks

Sumter (S.C.) Lakewood class of 2017 three-star defensive end Tyreek Johnson knew when he landed an offer from South Carolina last month that he was likely to end up at his dream school.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Johnson made it official Saturday when he committed to the Gamecocks during an unofficial visit to the school with his family.

"The work ethic and a fast paced, physical football team fits me," Johnson said. "It's where I actually fit in. I'm soon gonna be a part of that team and family."

Johnson chooses the Gamecocks over offers from Duke and Coastal Carolina.

Johnson was recruited to the Gamecocks by outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson.

"He's funny, energetic and that's the type of person I would most likely like to be like one day," Johnson said. "And I just look up to him. He's a great guy on and off the field. He'll help you if you need it."

He also has a strong relationship with head coach Will Mushamp and the rest of the USC coaches.

"The coaches are very energetic, and confident about what they have going on there," Johnson said. "I'm also very confident about this team. But they would put me in a position where they best need me."

Johnson is ranked the No. 19 overall prospect in South Carolina by Rivals.com.

Johnson is already qualified, according to Lakewood head coach Brian Jackson, and could be an early enrollee.
