Gamecocks offer South Pointe edge rusher
Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe class of 2018 defensive end Eli Adams started his weekend off with huge news this morning when he dropped by South Pointe head coach Strait Herron's office and received word that he had landed his first scholarship offer -- from South Carolina, no less.
"It was a complete shock, I was surprised," Adams said. "I wasn't thinking South Carolina was going to offer this early. I found out this morning. I came to Coach Herron's office and he told me. I was just overwhelmed and in shock. And happy."
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Adams produced 18 sacks and 107 tackles last season as a sophomore which has led to major recruiting interest.
Adams says he talks most with running backs coach Bobby Bentley and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson at South Carolina.
"They're cool," Adams said. "Most coaches, they don't really pass off like that, but they're more like a friend-type coach. I enjoy them."
Adams, who grew up just outside of Columbia, about 30 minutes from the stadium, says he grew up fan of the Gamecocks.
"To me, I think it's probably a little different with the new coaching staff," Adams said. "But the way the program works, the tradition of how they come in with the music, I just love everything about it."
Adams says he's not ready to name a favorite. Schools like Clemson, N.C. State, Maryland and Syracuse are also involved.
"It just happened today, so I don't really have a real plan, but I believe I'm going to take as many visits as I can and see how it is at different schools," Adams said. "Whoever offers by my senior year, I'm going to take those official visits, pick my five schools."
Adams says the fit will be most important factor in his recruitment: "Just the fitting in part, with the players and the coaching staff, and the atmosphere and then the school, academic wise with my major."
