Gamecocks in the pros: Week of May 18-23

Here’s how Gamecocks in the majors or a major-league farm system fared from Wednesday, May 18 to Monday, May 23.

Majors

--Jackie Bradley continues his tear this week as well. He went 5-for-14 with Boston (.357) with three runs, two homers and two RBI. He’s hitting .423 in May and has a MLB-leading 27-game hitting streak.

--Steve Pearce went 4-for-12 (.333) for Tampa Bay this week, playing in four of the team’s five games. He hit one home run and had two runs scored.

--Justin Smoak continues his solid play in May with a 5-for-20 (.250) week with Toronto. His batting average is up to .338 this month and at .284 this season.

--Sam Dyson was named the official closer for Texas this week and followed the announcement with two saves in back-to-back appearances. He gave up two hits and an earned run while striking out two batters.

--Whit Merrifield just finished up his first week in the majors with Kansas City, going 4-for-13 (.308) with two runs scored. He’s still searching for his first career RBI.

Triple-A

--Christian Walker had a good week with the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore) going 5-for-16 (.312) with two home runs. His average in May rose from .241 last week to .247 now.

--Michael Roth started one game for the Red Rock Express (Rangers), pitching 6.2 innings and giving up only two runs on on six hits. He earned the win and improves to 4-1 this season with a 1.77 ERA.

--Tyler Webb pitched 1.1 innings in relief for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRaiders (Yankees). He didn’t allow a run and gave up two hits. He struck out three batters.

Double-A

--Evan Marzilli went 5-for-22 (.227) for the Mobile BayBears (Kansas City) with four runs scored and two RBI. His average is now at .343.

--Bryan Harper pitched four innings over three games for the Harrisburg Senators (Washington), giving up one run on two hits. The run was just the second he’s given up all season. He boasts an ERA of 1.46.

--Peter Mooney went 4-for-18 for the Jacksonville Suns (Marlins) with three runs scored and no RBI.

--Joel Seddon pitched 8.2 innings for the Midland Rockhounds (A’s), giving up one run on nine hits. Coming into the month with an ERA near 20, he’s whittled it down to 7.54.

--Jordan Montgomery started one game for the Scranton Yankees (Yankees), giving up three runs on four hits. He struck out seven batters but earned a no decision. His ERA is 2.57.

--Evan Beal was demoted to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals from Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City). He threw three shutout innings of relief in his first appearance this season in Double-A. He also earned his first win of the season (1-0).

Single-A Advanced

--Kyle Martin went 3-for-17 (.176) for the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies), bringing his average down to .212 this season. He did, however, have a two-run home run game May 23. He finished the week with two runs scored and three RBI.

--Tanner English remains on the 7-day disabled list for the Fort Meyers Miracle (Twins).

--Grayson Greiner went 2-for-9 (.222) for the Lakeland Tigers (Detroit) with two runs. His season average is now .353.

--Joey Pankake went 5-for-10 with the Lakeland Tigers (Detriot) with three runs and two RBI.

--L.B. Dantzler brought his average up with a 6-for-15 (.400) week with the Dunedin Blue Jays (Toronto). He finished with a run and two RBI. His average rose from .167 to .235.

Single-A Full Season

--Max Schrock went 5-for-21 (.238) for the Hagerstown Suns (Washington) with a run and three RBIs His average in May is .305.

--Jack Wynkoop started one game for the Asheville Tourists (Colorado) going 4.2 innings with seven hits and three earned runs. He struck out eight but wound up losing the game. It’s his second loss this season and he moves to 4-2.
