DB Damarri Mathis commits to USC

On the heels of a morning commitment from Florida defensive back Tavyn Jackson, South Carolina has received another pledge from a prospect at the position.

Lakeland's Damarri Mathis out of Florida decided to cast his lot with the Gamecocks on Friday afternoon.

"I feel like it's the best place for me right now," he said. "I feel like Coach Muschamp and Coach T-Rob are doing a lot of good things and putting a lot of guys in the league and in the right position on the defensive side of the ball. I think they will fit me perfect."

T-Rob, also known as Travaris Robinson, the Gamecocks defensive coordinator, was a major factor in his recruitment.

"He's a cool coach," Mathis said. "He's very genuine. He really wants me to be a part of their program. He also has a good history of sending guys to the league."

The 5-foot-11, 178-pounder chose USC over offers from Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Southern Miss, UCF, and others.

"They said that they are excited to have me and excited for me to be a Gamecock," Mathis said.

Mathis landed a camp offer from South Carolina earlier this summer.
