Dawkins talks future as a Gamecock

After picking up a late offer from South Carolina, in-state wide receiver Chavis Dawkins made a commitment to the Gamecock program earlier this month.

Still, the Shrine Bowl selection admits he had a good bit to learn about the school and the football team heading into his official visit. That trip took place this past weekend, giving Dawkins a closer look at what his future will be like.

“I just got to really look into everything. I’ve been here before, but I really got to see in the inside,” he explained. “I’ve been looking from the outside in.”

In speaking with offensive coordinator Kurt Roper and co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon, Dawkins found out more about what his role will be on the offense.

“I’ll be playing outside. They’re just looking for me to come in, compete for a position and try to start, make some plays,” he said.

Also taking place on the trip was an opportunity to hang out with some future teammates, including player host Deebo Samuel.

“It was fun. Everybody got along well,” Dawkins said.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder is ready to hit the ground running upon his enrollment late in May.

“I think it will be pretty good. I’ll get here, have to put in a lot of work and see what we can do from there.”

Dawkins hopes to wear number 9 at USC.
