Damani Staley commits to South Carolina

In-state linebacker Damani Staley became the latest prospect to verbally commit to South Carolina on Wednesday.

"It feels great, I'm excited. I can't explain it," he told GamecockCentral.com. "I feel comfortable, especially with the coaches. Coach Muschamp, a lot of the other coaches, they hit me up to spend time with them. We talk about anything whether it's life or football."

The Midlands defender is being eyed by the Gamecock staff as a linebacker in Will Muschamp's defense with the ability to get after the quarterback on the edge.

"They want me as as stand-up linebacker, pass rusher," he said. "They want me rushing off the end. Coach Muschamp always talks about how long my arms are."

The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder has a familiar namesake, as he is the son of former Gamecock running back Duce Staley. What are his thoughts on attending the same university his father did back in the 1990s?

"It means a lot. When I was growing up, I used to hear all these stories about how my dad was this and that. I've always been a fan of the Gamecocks. I've always dreamed of being a Gamecock."

The Columbia (South Carolina) Ridge View product also carried offers from East Carolina and Georgia Tech. During his junior season, Staley led the state of South Carolina in sacks with 22. He also tallied 88 total tackles.

"My strength is my speed. I love using my speed. I want to improve on getting bigger and stronger in the weigh weight room."
