D.J. Wonnum talks South Carolina pledge

Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson three-star defensive lineman D.J. Wonnum committed to Indiana earlier this week but quickly reversed course and committed to South Carolina Sunday morning.

"I guess the relationship with the coaches and players and everything," Wonnum said of the reason. "I really enjoyed it, I had a good time. They have my major and everything. It was stressful, but I think I made the best choice. Iron sharpens iron."

Wonnum was recruited to Carolina by defensive line coach Lance Thompson and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson. Wonnum recently met with head coach Will Muschamp at his school.

"He was just telling me it's the best of the best; I doesn't get any better than the SEC," Wonnum said. "I was excited about that."

Wonnum was hosted on his official visit this weekend by defensive end Dante Sawyer.

"He's a cool cat," Wonnum said. "He plays d-line as well, so I can learn from him."

Wonnum says he first started hearing from South Carolina in December. He will play the BUCK position for Carolina and believes he'll enroll in June.

"I bring quickness," Wonnum said. "I'm a good pass-rusher off the edge with long arms. I use my arms to my advantage. Playing physical, fast."

He held offers from Cincinnati, California, Iowa State, South Florida, Colorado State and Miami (Oh.).

Wonnum was named to the All-Region team for Class 6-AAAAA Division A as a defensive lineman after recording 38 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks this past fall for a 9-2 Stephenson team that made it to the state playoffs.
