All about relationships for Urich

Piedmont (S.C.) Wren class of 2017 quarterback Jay Urich continues to see his recruitment pick up with major programs showing interest.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder was being recruited by South Carolina's previously staff and Urich recently spoke with new co-offensive coordinator Kurt Roper about visiting for the Gamecocks' junior day. Urich followed through with those plans on Saturday.

"It was overall really, really good," Urich said. "I'm just trying to create relationships with all the new coaches and the staff and just spend time with them and get to know them and I'm really excited about the future of these coaches in the program."

Urich, who holds an offer from S.C. State, spoke with Roper about a possible offer from the Gamecocks in the future.

"They were saying they're still sort of in the evaluation process, so it's not a definite yes or no thing, more of a process," Urich said. "He definitely wants to see me throw in person, but other than that, he's just trying to get to know me more and get that relationship built. That's what it's all about and that's what all of the coaching staff was about is relationships, and that's something I value too. I think it that it was a really good visit. I got to know that they're high on relationships and that's exactly how I am."

Urich also has a prior connection to the Gamecocks co-OC and quarterbacks coach.

"It was great; I got to meet (Roper) for the first today," Urich said. "He's trying to build that relationship to where it's a good one. I know his brother, because he's recruiting me at Duke, and they're just alike. I'm going to enjoy getting to know him and building that relationship."

Urich has been on Carolina's campus many times before, but he did notice some differences in how the junior day was run by the new staff.

"They had some of the same things going on, but one major thing that was different was we head a time after the coaches spoke where they left the room," Urich said. "There were no coaches, just a couple of current players like Perry Orth and Bryson Allen-Williams and a couple of other players came in to speak and answer questions for 15 or 20 minutes and all the players and parents got to know the other side of the program and what it's like to really get to know the current players. That was a highlight of it."

Urich plans to visit N.C. State or Charlotte and then Duke next.

Meanwhile, he's been working with a private quarterback tutor in order to better perfect his craft.

"First off my quarterback trainer, coach Ramon Robinson (Elite Position Training) has really been a positive influence in my life and I've been working with him on my mechanics and footwork throughout the season and especially in the offseason," Urich said. "That's a big thing is getting my feet working and really working on the ladders and the footwork drills to get our legs back underneath us and then getting stronger, bigger and faster. That's the main thing I've been doing now is working out with him and getting stronger in the weight room and I'm going to run track this season."
