Leading off

--Gene Cone’s 31-game hitting streak was snapped after going 0-for-4 against Dustin Beggs.

--Braden Webb lost for only the second time all season. He did strike out 10 batters, setting the single-season record by a freshman with 93 punch-outs. He passes Kip Bouknight.

--Jonah Bride was hit by his 17th pitch Saturday. He’s now four away from tying Brandon Walter’s 20-year record of 21 hit by pitches in a season.

--John Jones did not start in game two. TJ Hopkins replaced him and played in centerfield. It was Hopkins 20th start this season and fourth straight start in centerfield.

--It was only the third time all season the Gamecocks were shutout and the first in SEC play. The first two times came against Clemson (5-0) and North Carolina (15-0).

On deck

Holbrook on losing in the SEC play: “You’re going to get your tail kicked from time to time. And today, with the pitcher they threw and the fact we couldn’t bunch any hits together, it happens,”

Holbrook on not starting John Jones: “He didn’t feel well. He just didn’t feel well. He just wasn’t quite right. I gave him the day off. He had a headache and didn’t feel right to play, so hopefully he’ll play tomorrow.”

Braden Webb on setting the freshman strikeout record: “No. Strikeouts are great an everything, but I’m here to help my team the best possible way I can, to help them win. And if I’m giving up a lot of extra-base hits and free bases, I can’t help my team out. So no, that doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s cool, but I can’t say it means anything to me right now.”

Gene Cone on Beggs: “He was locating with every pitch he had, throwing breaking balls in hitter’s counts. He kept us off balance and did a great job.”

Thompson-Williams on Gene Cone’s hitting streak ending: “I’m blessed to see it. Not a lot of people can say they’ve done that. I’m proud of Gene, the whole team is proud of Gene. Even if you’re not from South Carolina or part of the Gamecock fans, I think you should be proud of Gene.”

Hitting Cleanup

--Braden Webb through three wild pitches against the Wildcats, all in the same inning. He had only thrown six wild pitches before that (65 innings).

--South Carolina only had seven base runners total and had runners on in four innings. Four of those seven runners were left on base.

--Braden Webb gave up a solo home run in the seventh inning. South Carolina’s starters this weekend have allowed five runs off of three home runs through two games this weekend. Kentucky has scored almost half of their runs (5-of-11) on homers.

--After Saturday’s loss, five Gamecocks are batting over .300. LT Tolbert, who went 0-for-3, saw his average drop from .226 to .222.

--Dom Thompson-Williams and Alex Destino both extended their hitting streaks Saturday. Thompson-Williams has a five-game streak while Destino’s hit safely in three straight games.
