15 Things: Alabama Game 1

Box Score | Game Story

Leading off

--Clarke Schmidt had his shortest outing of the season, pitching just 4.2 innings. It was tied for the second-most runs he’s given up behind the five he gave up against Kentucky.

--South Carolina hit 3-for-12 (.250) with runners in scoring position and had two RBI with two out. Alabama hit 1-for-11 (.011) with runners in scoring position and also had two two-out RBI.

--Tyler Johnson earned his third save of the season, keeping him second on the team behind Josh Reagan.

--South Carolina posted at least 10 hits for the third straight game. The Gamecocks are averaging 12.33 hits per game since losing game two against Texas A&M.

--Jonah Bride, Gene Cone, Marcus Mooney and Dom Thompson-Williams all extended their hitting streaks to three games Thursday.

On Deck

Reed Scott on his early entry to the game: “I knew Clarke can go a long time, but with the early turnaround with the SEC Tournament, there’s a chance I would have to come in soon. I was just ready at any point.”

Reed Scott on his stamina: “I wouldn’t say tired. I just had to make sure I kept my focus. They really battled tonight. They weren’t swinging at balls; they were taking pitches the other way. I knew that whatever I did I had to stay focused.”

Madison Stokes on the team’s 40th game: “It’s big, but you have to look past that and keep on going to reach your goals and set them higher each time.”

Chad Holbrook on Scott: “Reed was special. He’s been special his last couple of appearances. I feel comfortable going to him in any spot. We had to extend him tonight because Reagan needs some time. So Reed’s performance not only helped us win tonight, but he’ll give us a fresher Reagan the rest of the weekend.”

Chad Holbrook on aggressive base running: ‘”We’re just trying to win the game. We made some stupid base running mistakes, but we were just trying to win the game. Wins in this league and big wins when you’re trying to accomplish something special in the regular season, they don’t fall in your lap; you have to go win it. While we made a few mistakes, we were trying to win the game. And I don’t fault their effort for that.”

Hitting Cleanup

--John Jones hit in the seven spot Thursday, which is the lowest he’s hit in the lineup all season. He finished 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

--DC Arendas started back-to-back games for the Gamecocks since April 22 and 23 against Missouri. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt.

--South Carolina won game one of a series for the 11th time this season. The Gamecocks are 11-3 in game ones and 7-3 in SEC first games.

--Madison Stokes finished 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch. His three hits tied a career high.

--Clarke Schmidt brought his strikeout total to 108 Thursday, which is the most a Gamecock pitcher has had since Michael Roth struck out 112 batters in 2011.
